Free Washington State Park Day Coming Up

Billy Frank Jr Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge Is A Great Place To Explore

Mark your calendars: Thursday, March 19, 2026, is a designated free day at Washington State Parks, celebrating the 113th anniversary of the state park system. On March 19th, visitors can enjoy over 140 state parks without the need for a Discover Pass

This initiative offers an excellent opportunity to explore the natural beauty of Washington without the usual parking fees. Whether you're interested in hiking, birdwatching, or simply enjoying a picnic, there's a park to suit your interests.

Discover a speical workshop event at Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge on March 19 titled "Estuary Mystery." The workshop starts at 1 pm and is part of their monthly public series and provides an engaging way to learn about the estuary's ecosystem.

In the Olympia area, there are several other state parks to explore:

Tolmie State Park

Located just north of Olympia, Tolmie State Park offers forest trails, beach access, and stunning views of Puget Sound.

Millersylvania State Park

A beloved destination in Thurston County, Millersylvania features peaceful lakeside trails, old-growth forests, and excellent picnic spots.

Nisqually State Park

Near Yelm, Nisqually State Park is a newer addition offering expansive prairies, wetlands, and mountain views.

Free park days are perfect for family hikes, birdwatching, beachcombing along Puget Sound, early spring photography, or a simple afternoon picnic. Even in March, the forests around Olympia begin to show signs of spring—fresh moss, blooming skunk cabbage, and migrating birds returning.

Looking ahead, Washington State Parks have designated several other free days in 2026:

  • March 19 — State Parks’ Birthday
  • April 22 — Earth Day
  • June 6 — Free Fishing Weekend
  • June 7 — Free Fishing Weekend
  • June 19 — Juneteenth
  • Aug. 9 — Smokey Bear's Birthday
  • Sept. 26 — National Public Lands Day
  • Oct. 10 — World Mental Health Day
  • Nov. 11 — Veteran's Day

Remember, while the Discover Pass fee is waived on these days, other fees for camping or facility rentals may still apply. It's always a good idea to check the specific park's website for any additional information before your visit.
