January in the Pacific Northwest is the perfect time to prepare for a flourishing spring garden.

Assess your seed supply, tossing out any that are more than four years old to ensure strong germination.

Review notes and photos from past seasons to decide which varieties thrived and should return to your beds.

Start early crops like kale, broccoli, and herbs indoors now, with tomatoes and peppers to follow in February.

Test your soil for nutrients and add amendments as needed, even if you use compost every year.

It's also a prime time to plant bare-root fruit trees and winter-flowering shrubs, which benefit from moist soil.

Don’t forget to prune dormant trees and vines, build or repair raised beds, and protect crops from freezing with mulch and row covers.

Clean and sharpen garden tools, and inspect for overwintering pests to keep everything in top shape for spring.
